Ron Moody’s presence at SAUL’s Winter Social on Sunday, 4th December 2011 brought in a capacity audience of members and friends. Nearly 150 people sat down to an excellent chicken meal and were entertained by the music of Rachel Joel and by Ron Moody’s reminiscences of his very varied screen and stage life.
Some months ago SAUL’s President, Marilyne Rose, had seen and heard Ron
Moody, probably best known for his portrayal of Fagin in the musical
“Oliver”, entertain an audience at a private function.
She had the inspired idea to invite him to our Winter Social which had
the twin objectives of bringing SAUL members and friends together in a
happy (pre-Chanukah) gathering and, at the same time, of enabling the
lodge to gather funds for B’nai B’rith’s principal charities – Qiryat
Gat and Ukraine. Moody accepted our invitation, and, most importantly
from a fund-raising point of view, offered to entertain free of charge
as we are a Jewish charity.
Demand for tickets was outstanding, probably the best in SAUL’s 26 year
history, with the consequence that we needed a waiting list of
interested people. Some very generous raffle prize donations ensured its
success.
Ron Moody’s name and reputation helped SAUL to “pick the pockets” of
members and friends to the tune of some £2000, destined for B’nai B’rith
charities.
