France - The Joseph Reich Lodge in Lyons PDF Print E-mail

This Lodge was established in 1976.

Doctor Joseph Reich was born in 1903 in Roswadof, Galicia (Poland), an enclave of Jewish thought.

As a teenager, he came to Strasbourg to study medicine, where he met his wife and started a traditional Jewish family. He moved to Lyons shortly before the Second World War, and despite his work, devoted himself to various public activities based around love and active support for Israel.

It was not an easy task, as the post-war Jewish community was drained and its leaders often far from Zionism; however, he led Lyons Jewish community to love and support Israel.

He founded Magbith-Keren-Hayessod, a charity supporting Israel, which was described as "one of Israel's lungs", by a minister of the time.

He also founded the Lyons branch of the World Jewish Congress, which formed Diaspora policies. His peers voted him onto the Executive. He also led the Lyons office of the Jewish Agency, organising the Aliyah and educational tours of Israel.

A keen student of the Talmud, he chaired religious education boards in Lyons and its Region.

He was the founding member of the Committee of the Maison Communautaire in Lyons, and also established the first B’nai B’rith in Lyons, with Robert Lehmann.

For many years he was President, before becoming Honorary President.

He passed away suddenly in 1975, having left his mark on the Jewish Community in Lyons.
