This Lodge was established in 1963.
Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, better known by his initial Hebrew initials, Rashi, was born in 1040 in Troyes, and was an outstanding Bible and Talmud commentator.
His commentaries are clear, lucid and based on common sense, clearing up textual difficulties and obscurities. Unfortunately, no actual trace remains of Rachi and his family in the former capital of Champagne.
It should also be said that in the XIth century, men rather than women were responsible for passing on religion to their children, and, in this respect, Rashi's thinking was new, while still working within the framework of traditional religious education.
The Lodge named after him now works to keep his memory alive. Rashi, also known as Rabban Shel Yisrael, Teacher of Israel, died in Troyes in 1105.
2005 was the 900th anniversary of Rashi's death, and throughout the world, this has been marked with conferences, lectures and other activities.
