Every year European Day of Jewish Culture continues to expand in both its magnitude and vision. This year the European Day of Jewish Culture took place on 2nd September, with the theme ‘Testimonies' in 30 countries throughout Europe.
Participants had the opportunity to see imprints left by Jews everywhere they have lived (trails of their faith, marks of their presence, living testimonies of their contribution to the development of their village, city, or region). Written testimonies such as religious works, books, manuscripts, etc. will be on display illustrating the history and evolution of life, religious practices, and customs of Jews. 'Architectural testimonies' featured synagogues, cemeteries, Jewish quarters etc., bereft of Jewish communities across Europe.
Some highlights include an extensive UK program which will last for some two weeks, taking place between the 2nd to 16th September. Visitors will embark on a fascinating journey through Anglo-Jewish history with open days, guided walks, exhibitions, lectures, and other events.
In Antwerp, Belgium, for the first year ever, guests were invited to visit the city's most important Jewish sites, including historic synagogues and museums.
Turkey has once again taken part in the European Day of Jewish Culture. During the day different museums, synagogues, and cultural centres were opened to the public with concerts, performances, exhibitions, and conferences.
An extended program also took place across France with visits to museums, synagogues, cemeteries, klezmer concerts, and more. Events will take place from the 2nd to 9th September.
In Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, art exhibitions and lectures looked at Sephardic culture following the exile from Spain.
The President of B’nai B’rith Europe, Reinold Simon, took the opportunity of this important European event to visit the Antwerp Lodge and learned about their many activities. In connection with the European Day of Jewish Heritage, he visited the “Hollandse Synagogue” (Dutch Synagogue) where Professor Rav Malinsky was conducting his third tour of the premises to the many visitors. Visitors were also being introduced to B’nai B’rith through short lectures.
