Various events took place, organised by the Mala Zimetbaum Lodge in Antwerp during the last quarter of 2007:
In October, the annual commemoration of Mala Zimetbaum presented by President René Trau took place at the Yavne school.
The event was attended for the first time by the Deputy Burgomaster for Culture Mr. Philip Heylen who delivered a speech on the subject “Souvenirs that should not be forgotten”. The curator of the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum, Erwin Joos, presented paintings of emigrants of the “Red Star Line” (Jewish emigrants from Russia at the beginning of last century) from the works of Eugeen Van Miegem. A poem by a Jewish Flemish resistant deported to the Gross Rosen camp was read, with a musical intermezzo by Paul Van Suetendael, and a survivor from the Shoah, Moshe Fink brought his personal testimony.
In November the cultural season was opened with two conferences, one by Professor Herman Van Goethem, historian from the University in Antwerp on “Thoughts regarding Belgium’s consent” on the responsibility of the country for the deportation of Jews from 1940 to 1944.
A presentation was then given by Dror Vanunu and Laurence Beziz from Israel who reported on the present situation of the former inhabitants of Gush Katif and the help they are trying to give those who still do not have housing. The profits of the evening were entirely donated to Gush Katif.
In December, the Chanukah candles were lit during a festive afternoon with a lecture by Leo Schumer on the festival, klezmer music, singing and a tea party.
