Some 3, 000 friends of Israel and almost 200 organisations, supporters of Israel, came to the Congress Centre at the Frankfurt Fair on Sunday, 23rd October 2011 to demonstrate their solidarity with the State of Israel.

This was the largest pro-Israel congress ever to have taken place in Europe and stood under the patronage of the President of the Central Committee of Jews in Germany, Dr. Dieter Graumann, of the Ambassador of the State of Israel, Yoram Ben-Zeev and of Mrs. Regine Sixt of SIXT AG.

"Israel has good friends in Germany" said Ambassador Ben-Zeev, "and many of her best friends are here today". Dieter Graumann underlined the need for solidarity with Israel which continues to fight for its very existence. He reminded his audience of the part being played by Iran behind the terrorism of Hamas and Hisbollah and demanded that the Lebanese militia of Hisbollah should be banned in Germany.

In a powerful speech, Danny Ayalon, Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister, said: "Germany is our closest friend in Europe". He continued: "We share the same values. The fate of Europe and of Israel is closely linked. Europe should be seen by the Middle East as an example of cooperation." He, too, pointed to the threat posed by Iran: "Iran wants to use the Middle East revolutions for its own ends and should be seen as a global danger. Now is the time to take counter measures".

Frankfurt Schönstädt Lodge took a display stand at the Congress and used the opportunity to publicise the wide ranging activities of B'nai B'rith in Europe. Many visitors showed keen interest in the various projects. The stand was manned by some of the younger members of the lodge, notably Dr. Toni Singer, Vered Zur-Panzer, Irina Rosensaft, Marcel Kluckow and Kirill Boguslavski.

The German Israel Congress is set to be a major annual event, and our participation is important for the image of B'nai B'rith.
