The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was marked under the aegis of the Federation of Jewish Communities, with the participation of all Jewish organizations, as well as country officials. 

President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, has decorated the Federation, the Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania, “Elie Wiesel”, the Holocaust Museum of Northern Transylvania in Șimleul Silvaniei and three Roma survivors. 

The Jewish Community Center organized an event to evoke the Holocaust, at the Șuțu Museum of the city of Bucharest. Romanian actress Maia Morgenstern presented excerpts from the play “Lights of the ghetto” which was further played throughout the week, at the Jewish Theater. 

Prior to the International Holocaust Day, the FCER organized a symposium on the Legionary Pogrom in Bucharest since January 1941. 

On January 27th 2020, the Institute “Elie Wiesel” organized a film festival, dedicated to the Holocaust and illustrating the sufferings of the Jews through both artistic and documentary films. The Romanian Cultural Institute organized a musical evening with Jewish songs, an exhibition of school students who participated in a painting camp with the subject of the Holocaust and the film “Jewish Itineraries”, the first part of a series dedicated to the Jewish communities in Romania, today a rather small number, the main cause being the Holocaust. Over 300,000 Jews died during the Holocaust, in Romania. 

FCER President, Dr. Aurel Vainer, Director of the “Elie Wiesel” Institute, Alexandru Florian, the organizer of events at the Romanian Cultural Institute, Dan Schlanger, highlighted the significance of the day of January 27 and stressed the need to educate the young generation to know the real history of the Holocaust and the fight against antisemitism that is manifesting again in Europe and elsewhere. All the events were attended by a large number of spectators, both Jews, members of the Federation, B’nai B’rith and non-Jews. Numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps participated.
