B'nai B'rith Europe President Ralph Hofmann held a series of high level meetings in Israel during a visit there last week. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hofmann, along with B'nai B'rith World Center director Alan Schneider, met with Ambassador Rafi Schutz, Deputy Director General for Europe; Ambassador Ami Mehl Director, Jewish Communities Department, and Ambassador Ilan Ben Dov, Director, Western Europe Department. The discussion focused on the disappointing EU vote on the recent Palestinian unilateral declaration of independence at the UN, European reaction to the Israeli government's programme of expansion of settlements, European attitudes towards Israel, anti-Semitism in Europe and Israel-German relations. Together with World Center Chairman Haim Katz, Hofmann also met with former MK and cabinet minister Rabbi Michael Melchior. The wide-ranging discussion touched on current developments in the run-up to the general elections scheduled for January 22, Israel-Europe relations and the status Israel's Arab minority. During his trip, Hofmann also met with B'nai B'rith Israel President Micha Natan and members of the B'nai B'rith Israel leadership including B'nai B'rith International Vice President Yoram Luft and International Board of Governors member Avraham Huli. At the meeting, Hofmann described the activities of B'nai B'rith Europe and suggested forging closer cooperation between the two B'nai B'rith International affiliates.
