Dear Sisters, Dear Brothers

The growing anti-Semitism in Europe is of great concern to us all, whether it is the debate about circumcision, the discussions about Shechita or the constant criticism of Israel. These days we are also confronted with the boycott of goods made in Israel. These are all subjects which will be debated at the 2014 B'nai B'rith Europe Convention. Distinguished speakers have been invited to lead these "Round Table" discussions. We are all interested to find answers to the questions of how to deal with these growing threats and how we, as B'nai B'rith, should act.

Another major subject for discussion concerns the future of our organisation, the future of B'nai B'rith Europe. Dear Sisters and Brothers, let us reflect on our roots. The pillars of our Order are Benevolence, Sisterly and Brotherly Love and Harmony based on democratic understanding between all members. Humanitarian work, supporting the needy, are ongoing objectives of B'nai B'rith, but these can only be realised if the relevant funds are available. Never forget that we are a humanitarian organisation. We need to be united in facing today's challenges and in our struggles against injustice. We, as the oldest Jewish membership organisation, should never lose sight of our responsibility and of our duty to live up to our objectives and our ideals. What is important for us is not the individual who wants to promote her-or himself, but important to all of us is the Order of B'nai B'rith, founded 171 years ago and committed to the highest goals of humanity.

I shall be delighted to welcome you at the Frankfurt Conference in June.

Ralph Hofmann
President B'nai B'rith Europe
